From Comission to Construction - SOM Office Visit

Today we visited the New York offices for the SOM architecture firm and got a first-hand look at the types of work completed in the office on a regular basis. We were greeted at the front desk on the in the lobby, where we got a close look at the final models for some of the projects that have been completed by the firm  somewhat recently. Two of these included the main building for the New School and the Freedom Tower, which both had stunning and meticulously crafted appearances. These models had almost all details built in the final structures, down to the specific coloring of the materials.

Afterwards, we got shown a small presentation in the main conference room in which we were shown the process that buildings have to go through in order to be built, from commission to construction. It really shocked me how much time and effort goes into not only designing the building, but also pleasing the customer. The renders that were shown to us(of currently active projects) each look professional and perfectly scaled, such that they explain the design choices made in a clean and polished way. Overall, the experience of just getting to walk through the office and watch the workplace function is one to remember and I hope that I will get to visit again sometime in the future.

Included are images of their model of lower New York which includes some of their work around the trade center area as well as buildings that didn’t end up getting completed”11
